The Black Forest Germany

Biergarten In The River

What Not To Miss

I don’t just show you the obvious, I take you off the beaten path so you can experience the real Black Forest – like a local. I fill-in the blanks between the lines in those Travel Books and explain the not-so-obvious to give you a robust local experience. Many visitors to the Black Forest inquire about Hop-On-Hop-Off Tours. Unfortunately nobody offers these kind of tours in the Black Forest area. What I do offer are private guided tours (where you tour with a private guide and/or driver) and self-guided Travel Guide Itineraries where I show you how to tour on your own by train or by car. Fortunately when I ask visitors about their priorities I often get the same the answer ‘I want to see the ‘Best of the Black Forest’. Then sign up! I’ll show you. Most of my visitors fit into 2 categories: first are those who want to “see it all” in the limited amount of time – rushing through everything doesn’t matter to them – as long as they can take …

What’s New at Black Forest Tours

Greetings from the Black Forest! Many of you have stayed in touch after visiting me in the Black Forest. I always like to hear how you are doing once you are back in your home country – what did you enjoy most while here? What didn’t you like? Please keep on sending me your feedback – I love to hear from you! And this newsletter is my way of reciprocating; to tell you about the good things that have developed for me during the past year. For one, I have finally settled into the town of Freiburg. I found a cozy place in one of the most beautiful areas of the old town. From my office window I have a direct view of the old town gate. Please stop by if you visit Freiburg. If I have time, I am happy to show you my local haunts. Last season I was given the chance to participate in a Rick Steve’s tour as a guest tour guide. I loved the experience and highly recommend touring with Rick …

Is It A Good Idea To Visit The Black Forest In Winter?

Many people ask me if it is a good idea to visit the Black Forest in winter. Is it safe visiting in winter? Will it be cold? Is there anything to do during winter? Will we be able to drive in the mountains? Will there be snow? The answer if you should or should not visit in winter is easy: it all depends. Currently the Black Forest is covered in snow and it is an absolute dream to be here. Within minutes you can walk in the snow, go on a snowshoeing tour, rent skies or sit in one of the hot thermal baths surrounded by snow. Usually the streets are being cleared off from snow in the mornings and if you are used to drive in winter conditions you should not have a problem driving here. It is often a good idea to carry along some snow chains if you are driving in the mountains. Alternatively you can also take the train to get up into the mountains. This is the easiest and most …

Where is the Black Forest?

Everyone has heard of the Black Forest. Black Forest cake, Black Forest ham, Black Forest cherry schnaps….you can buy most of these products in your country but probably have never paid too many attention to where the product is from. Is there such a thing is the Black Forest? And where is the Black Forest located? Is it a Naturepark, a Nationalpark or an amusement park like Disneyland? Do you have to pay a fee to visit the park? Is it open in winter? Is it closed at night? Can you actually stay in the Black Forest? With Black Forest Tours we show you the real thing – we provide you with an introduction to the area, give you input on how to get to the Black Forest, tell you where to stay in the Black Forest and what to see. If you are adventurous we offer self-guided tours of the Black Forest. If this is your first time to Europe, Germany or the Black Forest we provide you with a private guide who will …

Harvest Season has begun

End of summer marks the beginning of the harvest season in our region. Many villages have started with the harvest of their grapes last week and the forecast is promising. If you happen to visit the Black Forest region right now – or within the next few weeks – make sure to participate in one of the famous ‘Weinwanderungen‘ – literally a ‘wine hike‘ in which thousands of people participate. They usually last a few kilometres and you will be equipped with a tasting glass and a map of the area. Every few kilometers there will be a wine-tasting station set up and local chefs create the appropriate appetizers, snacks and desserts to go with it. There is a shuttle service which will bring you back to your initial starting point. Besides the popular ‘wine hikes’ there are about a hundred wine festivals and other wine-related activities scheduled for the months of September and October. If you are lucky, you will even meet a wine princess. If you are not sure where to get started …

Wurstsalat – a local specialty worth trying

If you have visited the Black Forest before you might have noticed a dish in many local restaurants called ‘Wurstsalat‘. Literally translated to ‘sausage salad‘ you might have hesitated to try the dish (seriously – do you want to eat a sausage salad??) and probably ordered some more well-known German specialty like a Schnitzel. Not that there is anything wrong with ordering a Schnitzel. But during your next visit you might want to try a Wurstsalat. This dish is so popular in the Black Forest that there are plenty of websites dedicated to it. Many make it their goal to find the best Wurstsalat in the region and have online polls to show you where the best one can be found. Unfortunately all of the websites we have found are in German. Wikipedia describes a Wurstalat as a ‘tart sausage salad prepared with vinegar, oil and onions normally made from a sort of boiled sausage like lyoner, stadtwurst, regensburger or extrawurst.’ As shown in the pictures a hard-boiled egg, onions, tomatoes or pickles can be …
