Itinerary

Arrival Info

  • Arrive in the Black Forest by train (destination train station is Offenburg, from here you switch to a regional train which takes you to the hotel in about 60 minutes). A private car will pick you up from the train station and transfer you to the hotel.
  • If you are arriving in the Black Forest by car, we recommend parking the car at your last hotel in Offenburg area, then taking the train to your first hotel.

Accommodation on your arrival day.

We work with 2 different hotels as our starting hotels. Depending on your date of travel both hotels can be available and it is your choice. On other dates only one hotel might be available.

Option 1: Remote Wellness hotel up in the mountains.

This beautiful wellness hotel happens to be located in a remote mountain town. There is a complimentary lunch buffet waiting for you on your arrival day between 12.30 – 1.30 PM. There is also a complimentary coffee/cake buffet in the afternoon.  The hotel has extensive wellness facilities with several pools & saunas. No cell phone reception at the hotel (but there is wi-fi)

We recommend to arrive at lunch time. Early check-in on your arrival day at 12.30 PM possible (your room is available at 3 PM).  On your arrival day a complimentary lunch buffet is included. Therefore you can check in at lunch time, enjoy lunch and the wellness area at the hotel before getting your room at 3 PM.

Black Forest Trail Hike Germany (2)

You are staying in a very remote area of the Black Forest. There are no stores or restaurants nearby. The only restaurant in town is the restaurant at your hotel. We recommend to enjoy their 5 course dinner for hotel guests. You can also choose to eat from the regular menu and order a la carte.

Option 2: Boutique hotel outside a medieval town

This is a small friendly family-owned hotel with newly remodeled rooms. The hotel has a small wellness area. This boutique hotel is known for its restaurant (some hikers say it was the best meal during their entire stay in Germany). Enjoy in the sauna after your hike and the quietness of the suburb. In the morning you will hike straight from your hotel. Depending on your time of arrival (check in is at 3 PM) we provide you with a complimentary e-bike. This allows you to hop on the bike in the afternoon and pedal to town (3 km) or explore the nearby valley (we have a little surprise waiting for you if this is what you choose to do).

We work with 2 hotels which can be your starting hotel. The first hotel is a wellness resort up in the mountains. The second hotel is located  outside a cute medieval town. Depending on which hotel you are staying at the first few km of your hike are different.

Option 1. Wellness hotel in the mountains.

Black Forest Trail, Day 1

Your hike starts in front of your hotel. From here, you will be hiking down from the top of the mountain into the valley – a bit steep  – but in absolutely beautiful terrain.

You are then crossing through a medieval town for the second part of today’s hike. If you are too tired on your first day, you have the option to skip the remaining hike and head straight to to your hotel or enjoy an afternoon in town. This is also a good opportunity to grab lunch in town before continuing on your hike. Real hikers continue on of course. You will be rewarded with a beautiful chapel and the best vistas of the day as you descend the hillside into town to your hotel.

Option 2. Boutique hotel outside a medieval town.

Your hike starts in front of your hotel. From here, you will be along the river for the first few minutes until you enter the Black Forest. A steep mountain climb will take you to a sightseeing tower where you can enjoy views of the Black Forest valley. This is one of the best views you will experience over the next few days! If you are really fit there is a 2 km detour which takes you to a farmhouse for lunch.

Accommodation tonight

We have 3 hotels to choose from for tonight.  All hotels have restaurants where we recommend eating in the evening.

If you like to stay in the town centre we place you in a small family-owned hotel located in a timber-framed building in the heart of the old centre of a medieval Black Forest town. This is a simple hotel with lovely owners.

The restaurant is highly rated in the area and the favorite place in town to eat at (restaurant is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, other options in town)

Hotel_Blackforesttrail3

Our next hotel is located 2 km outside of town (which will extend today’s hike by a few minutes). This boutique hotel is known for its restaurant (some hikers say it was the best meal during their entire stay in Germany). Enjoy in the sauna after your hike and the quietness of the suburb. In the morning you will hike straight from your hotel.

Hotel_Blackforesttrail2

our third (backup) hotel is located 4 km away from town – you will hop on a bus after your hike to get to it. Newly remodeled family-run hotel, absolutely lovely! People love the place but we use the hotel only as a backup as you have to take a bus to get to it.

If you start hiking from the hotel outside of town the elevation looks like this:

If you are staying at the hotel in the middle of town your elevation looks like this:

Description of your day

Depending on your hotel last night you will either start hiking straight from your hotel.

Or you hop on an hourly train to take a 5 minute train ride to the neighboring town (free travel on trains included). Instead of taking the train in the morning you can also hike the distance to the next town – this is a short (6 km), but very steep climb over a mountain. Great option for the very fit as this will make it a 23 km (14 miles) hike total.

Explore a castle ruin before you hike into the forest. Today you can enjoy a self-serve fridge at a farmhouse which a farmer has put up for hikers. Enjoy scenic views and a wine bench before climbing up a sightseeing tower.

Accommodation

Our hotel is newly opened and in the heart of the old town. You are in walking distance to everything – perfect location. All rooms are modern and have A/C. The hotel does not have its own restaurant. But there are plenty of places to eat less than a 10 minute walk away. This seems to be the favorite hotel of our guests on the Black Forest Trail!

We do have a backup hotel which offers a brandnew remodeled rooms and a pool. This hotel is located 1 km outside of the town centre.

Our Route Description is highly detailed and customized, and we update it each season – not what you find online from other sources.

Have a look at the elevation profile images for each day – there is quite a bit of elevation to cover. There are some significant ascents and descents. Sometimes you have the option to shorten the route.

Our family's touring and hiking experience with Black Forest Tours was exceptional. Simone worked very closely, patiently and creatively with us to design the tour that would best meet our wishes and abilities. The towns we visited were special and stunning, each in their own way. The food was exceptional and accommodations were very, very good. The hiking, well this was spectacular. We had so many truly magical moments during these days that we still feel connected to and will certainly never forget. We absolutely loved the self-guided option, and with Simone's detailed and thorough printed guide as our primary support, and the GPS as our back up in any questionable moments, we had a thoroughly enjoyable, quiet and serene few days, just as we most like to hike. Our transfer day with Simone added delightful local insights and opportunities that we deeply appreciated. And having our luggage delivered daily to our next hotel was seamless and allowed us to have a one-directional route that we truly couldn't have enjoyed more. We often reflect on how much we would love to come back to the Black Forest and do a tour such as this all over again. Simone is exceptional at what she does, thank you for this magical experience for our family.
