A bit of background. There are 13 wine regions in Germany with more than 23,000 vineyards. The wine area of The Black Forest is the 3rd largest and southern-most wine region in Germany (called Baden). The climate in this area is warm, as the vineyards are sheltered by the surrounding mountains. Due to this warm climate, Baden produces the only wine-zone B class wines in Germany. Wine-zone B is the same category as the famous French wine areas of Alsace, Champagne, and the Loire Valley.

We recently set out on the wine hike ourselves:

Is it for me?

Itinerary

Arrival Info

Arrive in the Black Forest Wine Region by train (destination train station is Offenburg or Baden-Baden, from here you switch to a regional train which takes you wine area within a few minutes). The hotel is located very close to the train station,

Accommodation

Our hotel is brandnew – it just opened in 2021 which means your room has A/C – a very rare thing in the Black Forest. The hotel is located in town – you can walk to several restaurants from here. Your wine walk starts outside of your hotel.

Description of your day

  • Enjoy breakfast at your hotel. Then have a walk through town to get your self familiarized.
  • Later morning you will start your wine hike in town.
  • At the first stop you start out with a small appetizer and a glass of wine. Then you will head up into the vineyards.
  • Good to knwo: The length of the hike is only 8 km – but there is quite a hill to climb. Although the hike itself is only 8 km/5 miles long, it will take you several hours to complete it due to all the stops included.
  • We have included 4 stops in the area where we serve you food and wine. There are several more stops on your way back into town – you will even pass by a castle ruin.

Overview wine hike

  • First wine stop. To kick off your wine hike we invite you to an appetizer and a glass of champagne. Crossing through town you will arrive in the vineyards. Wine in the Black Forest grows on hillsides – which means there is quite a bit of elevation to this tour.
  • Second wine stop. A walk through the vineyards will bring you to the next stop – a restaurant overlooking the wine area. This is a busy place on weekends – great way to do some local-watching
  • Third wine stop. Now it is up up up the hill. After a steep climb up the vineyards you get to walk through portions of the Black Forest – a great way to cool down. The next stop offers a surprise – an old castle ruin!
  • Fourth wine stop. This is easy – a straight shot down the vineyards back into town. Time for dessert!
  • More wine stops. There are many more interesting stops on the wine trail for you – we recommend exploring all of them and will provide you with recommendations. Today is a good day to see how the locals live.

After 4 courses and 4 wines your hike ends in town in the evening.

Accommodation
